My Top 10 Wedding Planning Tips

Coming at ya today to spill alllll things wedding planning (no shocker there, it’s what I do).

I’m 99% sure I’ve seen just about everything that could go right (and wrong) when it comes to planning a wedding. Today I am wasting no time today in spilling ten practical tips you must know when planning the wedding of your dreams.

Without further ado, here are my top ten wedding planning tips:

DECIDE YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES

The #1 step in the wedding planning process is to sit down with your partner and map out what your priorities are, and what you’re not willing to budge on. This list of non-negotiables will give you a clear picture of what to prioritize when you’re in the thick of planning.

For example, if photos are a big thing for you, and the desserts are a big thing for your partner, put those at the top of your list (and budget) and make sure that those wants are met before you dive into some of the wedding details!

GET AHEAD ON THE SEATING CHART

There’s a reason we put puzzles together one piece at a time. If you want to avoid the overwhelm of planning a seating chart, then start piecing it together as RSVPs roll in. This way you aren’t stressing over seating a million people days leading up to your wedding.

BUILD A TIMELINE

Ok, you might need to read that tip 3 times because it’s vital to your wedding day. If you want a smooth wedding, creating a personalized timeline is a must! I’m talking when you’re getting ready, what time photos are happening, breaks for time with you and your partner, etc. We are so convinced you need one that we went ahead and made it for you! You can shop our wedding timeline guide here.

MAKE A LIST

Ice, cake cutter, pens, body tape, bobby pins - there are a million things to remember to bring with you on wedding day. Making a list of items you need to bring to the venue will literally save you so much time and stress.

BONUS TIP: Assign this list to someone close to that ISN’T you or your partner. Have them put together a basket of all these little things, and deliver it to the venue for you. (And maybe treat them to a cup of coffee as a thank you?) This will save SO much time and stress!

BRING COMFY SHOES

This one is for ANYONE who is wearing uncomfy shoes for their ceremony! Although your wedding shoes are gorgeous, they’re likely not the best thing to wear on the dance floor. Throw a comfy pair of shoes in your bag so you can enjoy the reception without blisters on your feet, and dance that freaking night away!

BONUS TIP: You could even consider a second outfit for the reception? Talk about COMFY! Remember, your day is your day. If you don’t want to stay in that formal wear, don’t do it!

LEAVE THE DRAMA AT HOME

Yep, I just went there. This tip goes for EVERYONE. (But mainly the wedding party/family/guests) It doesn’t matter what happened last week or the beef you have with someone before rolling up to the venue. This is not the day to hash it out, and we are leaving ALL the drama at home. It’s time to celebrate the couple! That’s it!

DON’T BUY DESSERT FOR EVERYONE

There are always, and I mean always, cupcakes on the dessert table after everyone leaves. You only need to account for 60-70% of your guests eating dessert at the reception. (Mind blowing, right?) Moreover, sticking to bite-sized sweets like cookies, cupcakes, or cake pops will make the distribution process a million times easier!

FLUFF THE DRESS

This little detail is often looked over, but it’s a true game-changer! Before the bride is about to take her first steps down the aisle, have her pause for a dress fluff! The last thing she wants is to see her dress disheveled in all the photos. This one is a freaking game changer for sure.

GET CREATIVE

Don’t be afraid to do things out of the box on your wedding day! This is YOUR day to do what makes YOU happy. Are food trucks your thing? Go for it. Want to have a morning wedding since brunch is your favorite meal of the day? Yes PLEASE. Want to ditch the traditional guest book? Check this out! (And use GRIT15 for 15% off!) All that matters is that this day reflects you - so this is your sign. Do whatever lights YOU up!

ENJOY EVERY MINUTE

Wedding days are famous for flying by. Take little moments through the day to breathe and take it all in with your partner. Doing so will help slow things down just a bit. The details will work themselves out on the day of your wedding. The most important part is that you feel celebrated, present, and loved.
